Cyprus dipute over natural gas exploration could be flashpoint where Ankara’s deteriorating ties with Jerusalem become truly dangerous.

Early this week, the US-based Noble Energy Company began exploratory drilling for offshore gas deposits off the coast of Cyprus. They did so with the agreement of the Nicosia authorities, in an area indisputably located within Cypriot territorial waters. Despite this, there was real concern that the drilling could face interference from Turkish navy ships on maneuvers in the area.

The explorations proceeded undisturbed. The Turkish ships observed procedures from a discreet distance. But Cyprus’s defiance of recent Turkish warnings against beginning the search for natural gas in this area is unlikely to be the last word on the matter.[...] Read more in Cyprus Now

EU member Cyprus has a major natural gas find on its hands, which is complicating even further dealings with EU-candidate country Turkey. Unification talks on the divided island and Cyprus’s turn as EU president next year make this a particularly testing time. Cyprus strikes it rich; Turkey insists the claim is far from cut and dry.

Αφού απέτυχαν να καταστήσουν την Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία ως χώρα μειωμένης κυριαρχίας μέσω του Σχεδίου Ανάν, εξαιτίας της οργανωμένης αντίστασης που προέβαλε ο αείμνηστος πρόεδρος της νήσου Τάσσος Παπαδόπουλος, ο «διεθνής παράγοντας ξαναχτυπά» με στόχο να βάλει από την πίσω πόρτα την Τουρκία στο παιχνίδι της εκμετάλλευσης των υδρογονανθράκων στην κυπριακή Αποκλειστική Οικονομική Ζώνη (ΑΟΖ).

Αιχμή του δόρατος μια δήλωση του ειδικού συμβούλου του γενικού γραμματέα των Ηνωμένων Εθνών, Αλεξάντερ Ντάουνερ, η οποία σε πρώτη φάση κατόρθωσε να συσπειρώσει τις πολιτικές δυνάμεις στην Κύπρο εναντίον του εμπνευστή της, ο οποίος πλέον δηλώνει ότι οι δηλώσεις του παρερμηνεύτηκαν…

Η επίμαχη δήλωση ήταν ότι «ο διεθνής οργανισμός είναι έτοιμος να αναλάβει μεσολαβητικό ρόλο για το θέμα των υδρογονανθράκων, αν του ζητηθεί από τις δύο πλευρές»! Το να μεσολαβήσει ο ΟΗΕ σημαίνει να φέρει τα δυο μέρη σε κάποιου είδους συζήτηση. Έλα όμως που σε μια τέτοια συζήτηση το αντικείμενό της θα είναι τα κυριαρχικά δικαιώματα του ενός μέρους! Από μόνη της μια τέτοια μεσολάβηση θα δικαίωνε με… τη βούλα των Ηνωμένων Εθνών τον καταφανώς παράνομο, νομιμοποιώντας τον σε ένα βαθμό, αν μη τι άλλο, το να φωνασκεί και να απειλεί![...] Read more in Cyprus Now

Σαφέστατο μήνυμα στη Τουρκία έστειλε χθες το Τελ Αβίβ αφού δύο μαχητικά αεροσκάφη της Ισραηλινής Πολεμικής Αεροποράς πέταξαν επιδεικτικά κατά μήκος των παραλιών της Τουρκίας, στα βόρεια όρια του FIR Λευκωσίας όπως αυτά αναγνωρίζονται διεθνώς εκτός από την Τουρκία. Σύμφωνα με δημοσίευμα της εφημερίδας Φιλελεύθερος, τα δύο μαχητικά πέταξαν μέσω Αποστόλου Αντρέα στον κόλπο της Μερσίνας και από εκεί μέχρι τη Φοινίκη, κοντά στο Καστελόριζο, προσεγγίζοντας σε μερικές περιπτώσεις τις τουρκικές ακτές σε απόσταση 15 μιλίων. Τα ισραηλινά μαχητικά αγνόησαν τις απόπειρες επικοινωνίας από το πύργο ελέγχου του παράνομου αεροδρομίου Τύμπου (Ercan) δείχνοντας ότι αναγνωρίζουν την κυριαρχία της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας σε ολόκληρο το FIR Λευκωσίας.

Παράλληλα και ενώ το Piri Reis  πλησίασε σε λιγότερο από 20 ναυτικά μίλια τη γεώτρηση στο Οικόπεδο 12, δηλαδή περί τα 25 μίλια από το όριο της Αποκλειστικής Οικονομικής Ζώνης του Ισραήλ, ένα ελικόπτερο της Ισραηλινής Πολεμικής Αεροπορίας πετούσε για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα πάνω από την πλατφόρμα της Noble στο κυπριακό οικόπεδο και στην περιοχή μέχρι το τουρκικό ερευνητικό σκάφος, που και χθες ανενόχλητο συνέχιζε να σαρώνει τον Ερατοσθένη.

Texas-based energy firm Noble Energy began exploratory drilling in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone on Monday, defying Turkish demands to cease and desist. Since the island of Cyprus is divided into two, with one part internationally recognized as the Republic of Cyprus and the other, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey, Noble Energy was already venturing into controversial waters. What Noble Energy, Cyprus, the United States and much of Europe likely did not anticipate, however, was that Turkey — for lack of better options — would try using this drilling dispute to herald its return to the eastern Mediterranean.

Regional developments — from Iranfilling a power vacuum in Iraq, to protracted unrest in Syria and a brewing Egypt-Israel crisis — are pushing Turkey into action. The United States is certainly aware of the problems that are quickly piling up in the Middle East, but Washington is still trying to regain its footing after more than a decade of fighting wars in the Islamic world. Turkey is in a position to ease the United States’ burden in this region. Washington and Ankara will have their fair share of disagreements, but Turkey’s considerable military, political and economic power can help Washington manage the neighborhood while pursuing common strategic interests on other issues, such as the containment of Russia.

Turkey, however, is not quite ready to fulfill this role, and is especially unprepared to project influence in the eastern Mediterranean. It takes time to build up regional clout, and to be credible a country needs to display military strength and political willpower. This may mean losing friends in some places, but for a country with ambitions like Turkey, that could be a small price to pay if it means Turkey’s neighbors will start taking Ankara more seriously. But hard power is, well, hard. Turkey, unprepared to deal with the more difficult issues, is instead expending a great deal of effort on low-cost rhetorical moves designed to enhance its regional clout.[...] Read more in Cyprus Now

A TURKISH oil exploration vessel left the Aegean port of Izmir yesterday to carry out surveys off northern Cyprus as part of Turkey’s pledge to question Cyprus’ rights over hydrocarbon deposits in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

According to Reuters, there was no sign of a Turkish naval escort for the Piri Reis and its 10 crew as the vessel set out, although Energy Minister Taner Yildiz had raised the possibility of such a security measure earlier this week.

However, Turkish daily Aksam reported yesterday that three Turkish navy frigates Salih Reis, Sokullu Mehmet Pasa and Oncu also left from Izmir port with the aim of acting as a hindrance to any drilling in areas that Turkey claims lie in its own territorial waters or those of the breakaway state in the north.[...] Read more in Cyprus Now
